E-Collar Training –FAQ’s

What is an e-collar, and how does it work?

An e-collar (or remote collar) is a training tool that uses low-level stimulation—similar to a gentle tap on the shoulder—to get your dog’s attention. It’s used to communicate clearly and consistently with your dog, especially at a distance or in distracting environments. It is not a shock collar, and when introduced correctly, it’s a fair and effective tool that can strengthen your bond with your dog.

Is e-collar training safe and humane?

Yes, absolutely. When used responsibly and correctly—through a conditioning process that prioritises your dog’s emotional wellbeing—the e-collar is a safe, low-stress communication tool. Our training follows PRAMA principles (Positive Reinforcement And Minimal Aversives) and is designed to empower both the dog and the owner without fear-based methods.

Will the e-collar hurt my dog?

No. The e-collar levels used in our training are very low, often lower than what a human can feel. We teach you how to find your dog’s working level (the lowest level they can perceive) and use it as a neutral, gentle cue—just like tapping someone lightly to get their attention. The goal is communication, not correction or discomfort.

What issues can e-collar training help with?

E-collar training is particularly effective for:

  • Reliable recall (even around distractions)

  • Off-lead freedom while maintaining control

  • Reactivity towards dogs, people, or wildlife

  • Impulse control and over-arousal

  • Pulling on the lead

  • General obedience in real-world settings

What kind of dogs can use an e-collar?

We work with dogs over 6 months old who are physically healthy and mentally ready for training. E-collar training is ideal for high-drive, working, or independent breeds—but with proper introduction, it can be beneficial for most dogs. All dogs are assessed individually to ensure the tool is right for them.

Does e-collar training work for all breeds?

Yes, e-collar training is suitable for dogs of all breeds and sizes. We tailor the training to your dog’s individual needs, temperament, and learning style.

Do I need experience to use an e-collar?

Nope! That’s what we’re here for. You don’t need any prior e-collar knowledge. Our 4-week program includes a detailed 1.5–2 hour educational session where we teach you exactly how to use the collar properly, humanely, and confidently. We’ll guide you every step of the way.

Do you provide the e-collar or do I need to buy one?

We’ll recommend specific models we trust (like the ET-300 Mini Educator or Dogtra ARC) and help you source the right one for your dog. We do not include the cost of the e-collar in the training package, as we want you to get a tool that suits your dog’s size and needs.

Is the e-collar a last resort?

Not at all. While many people come to e-collar training after trying everything else, it doesn’t have to be a last-ditch option. It’s simply another communication tool—when introduced early and ethically, it can prevent issues from escalating and give your dog more freedom sooner.

Can I use the e-collar just for recall?

Yes! Many clients choose to use the e-collar only for off-lead recall. It’s a brilliant way to give your dog more freedom while maintaining a safety net in high-distraction or high-risk environments. That said, once you learn how it works, you may want to use it for more general training as well.

Will my dog always need to wear the collar?

No. The e-collar is a training tool, not a permanent crutch. With consistent, positive training, most dogs reach a point where the collar becomes a backup or is no longer needed for day-to-day obedience. It’s there when you need it—especially for safety or reliability.

Dedicated to CPD (Continued Professional Development), she regularly advances her skills through respected organisations such as the Dog Training College and No Bad Dogs.

Rochelle follows a balanced, relationship-focused approach rooted in clarity, fairness, and results. As a PRAMA trainer (Positive Reinforcement with Minimal Aversives), she believes in rewarding good choices while ensuring there are appropriate consequences for unwanted behaviours. Her methods are tailored, thoughtful, and designed to support both dog and owner in building lasting, respectful communication.

What is PRAMA training?

PRAMA stands for Positive Reinforcement and Minimal Aversives. This approach is primarily rooted in positive reinforcement—rewarding behaviours we want more of—while also recognising the value of fair and minimal consequences when boundaries are tested.
